Reid was duped. So were the wingers. And as I read dkos, I'm astonished how people around here are being duped into thinking the Miers nomination is some kind of big victory.
Here's what we know about her:
- She has no life outside her job, other than being ACTIVE in a conservative evangelical church in Texas, oh, and choppin' hickory with W. when she's on vacation with him in Crawford.
- She LOVES, I mean LOVES W. who she has been quoted as describing as the "smartest man she's ever known."
- She's a corporate lackey who's big law firm got nailed for a 22 million dollar settlement for aiding a corporate ponzi scheme, al a Kenny Boy.
- She's been one of Bush's most lockstep loyal pit bulls since the day they met.
- Her contributions to Dems were back in the Pleistocene Era of Texas politics, and she only contributed to Gore to hedge her bets.
- She knows EXACTLY what Bush was looking for and it was HER- The PERFECT stealth candidate- One who's views and loyalty are as unassailable as Karen Hughes, and who's paper trail is non-existant and/or protected by the atty/client privilage.
FLIP
THE BOTTOM LINE: A rock-solid vote with Scalia and Thomas for the next 20 years, PLUS, the possibility that she'll add her own diabolical spin to things since she actually appears to be pretty bright.
Sure, it's a ton of fun to see how Bush screwed up the roll-out of this pick by not letting his base in on the deal, but the end of this story is that she'll get confirmed and become one of the worst justices in recent history.
All this joy about how they screwed up misses the forrest for the trees. The way most of you guys sound it's as though Mier just went on Fox and announced she was going to uphold the right of 6 year olds to get abortions at the corner 7-11.
The truth is, the wingers don't know squat, just like us. But you know who does know about Miers? Bush, Rove, Cheney, her pro-life pastor, and the hickory trees. I'll give ten bucks to anyone who can come up with a scintilla of evidence that she won't vote to overrule Roe the first chance she gets.
This bungled roll-out is a blast, and it ought to pay great political dividends down the line because it fits perfectly with the overarching themes of cronyism, corruption, and incompetence that finally seem to be sticking to the Republicans, but let's not for a moment think that this is the same as saving the Supreme Court from the right wing.
Wake up and smell the napalm, folks. The Supreme Court is gone, and anyone who thinks Miers will be tanked by a right-left coalition is out to lunch. Politics may make strange bedfellows but not that strange.
