Thought all day about posting this here, as
this LTE spoke to me as something deserving of the widest audience possible as soon as I read it.
Read it after the break.
What kind of Christian could advocate torture?
I am stunned by the report "61% of Americans in poll say some torture of terror suspects justifiable" (Dec. 7). Hearing clamor by "Christian (believers)" about stores that don't say "merry Christmas" and folks who are compelled to put up huge "merry Christmas" signs, I await those "Christians (believers)" rising up with one voice to disavow that poll.
To have been "formed in the image and likeness of God" is the dignity of every single human being, and Christmas is about the incarnation of the one in whom we all are invested with dignity.
The state of another's soul is not ours to judge - or torture.
How thankful the families of those U.S. soldiers killed in Iraq can be - at this moment the torture they might otherwise be undergoing would have the approval of 61 percent of their own neighbors.
If that is accurate, the terrorists have won and more than half of our citizens have embraced genuine evil.

From her language, it sounds like she is a truly devout woman. These are among the people who need to come to the forefront in making the case of how the cynical leaders of the Republican religious right are manipulating emotional issues at the expense of our country.
