CSPAN is the Republicans.
I don't think there is anything of the days political events that I or anyone else would rather see live on TV than the White House Press Briefing. Allowing us to watch, puts the White House Press Corp on a much higher level and we need to know what the president is saying about things through his press secretary Scott McClellan.
I think CSPAN did a lot to create the Republican majority and it does what it can, without being obvious, to keep it going. That could mean changing the subjects on their morning shows when Republicans get hammered and scheduling things to pre-empt bad times for Republicans. Like today, Karen Hughes is on CSPAN 1 and who cares what she has to say, the Senate is on CSPAN 2 and on CSPAN 3 they had Hillary talking to the ABA and a Tuesday replay of Sy Hersh.
What about the White House Press Briefing?
I will never forget the day that Alfonse D'Amato's Senate Banking Committee, with Michael Chertoff as lead council in the big bad Whitewater episode, got it's metaphorical head chopped of by great cross examination by Richard Ben Veniste. By his questions, he rendered the entire investigation as not only over but he proved it's uselessness!!
That session was pre-empted by the House and Senate and it finally appeared on CSPAN at something like 3:00AM? I set the alarm for it and saw it. It was magnificent and if you only read Adam Clymer's byline in the NY Times you would have no idea that Ben Veniste destroyed D'Amato and his committee that day.
