We've all watched with great joy our victories in Virginia, and New Jersey. We've had time to savor the crushing defeat of the The Terminated in his attempt to hijack California. We've shed a tear for Texas and cursed the turncoat Democratic leadership in Cuyahoga County. Overall, Tuesday was a pretty good day to be a Democrat in America. We've taken heart and maybe even some grim satisfaction from the implosion of the GOP. We've seen what happens when an energized Democratic Party shows up and a despirited and demoralized GOP stays home.
Steve Young joked, "Gee, I wish I were a Democrat running for office!"
OK. We've had our moment. Break time is over. Let's get back to work. We still have one more race to run before we celebrate the December holidays. See you on the flip. . .
California's 48th Congressional District is located in the beating heart of Republican Orange County. In a situation very much like Paul Hackett's, the long-time Republican representative was tapped by the Bush Maladministration for another public office when Christopher Cox went to the Securities and Exchange Commission. This presents us with a unique opportunity to run a great candidate for an open seat in the House. But that is where the similarity ends. This is a race that we can and should win. And we will win.
In Hackett's race, he ran head to head against the GOP. We have an advantage that he didn't have: A wingnut candidate (Jim Gilchrist, of Minuteman infame) on the extreme right to split the wingnuts from the moderate GOP. The Rethugs are running a Bushite rubber stamp candidate in John Campbell. This race is ours for the taking.
We know this because our internal polling tells us that Steve Young's star is ascendant. The national mood is one of deep distrust of the Bush Maladministration and it's failed policies. Orange County is ready for a change. We've had enough.
We know because at the beginning of the campaign, Campbell was fighting off Gilchrist. But he's changed his tactics and is now fighting off Steve Young. His internal polling tells him that Gilchrist is not his biggest threat.
We know this because the GOP has been push-polling in OC. They're lying about Steve. They're scared.
We also know this: When we win here, the GOP is done. We heard the spin. The Rethugs are saying that Tuesday changed nothing. When we in in CA-48, evertything changes. This is supposed to be their safest district. When we take it, we prove that every district is in play.
I have been working for Steve Young since the day he announced. I have been in the middle of a Perfect Storm consisting of the convergence of three personal crises at once. And I still work for him. It is that important to me. Today I am producing phone-banking lists, precinct walk lists and mailing lists. I do this because I know that winning here, in Orange County will drive the stake through the beating heart of the GOP. Winning here will complete the shattering of the GOP in the House. They will be in complete disarray for the remainder of the term.
This is where we set the stage to retake the House and the Senate next fall. This is where we break the unholy alliance of the Fascists, the Dominionists and the Neocons forever.
We will win by energizing our base. We've seen in Virginia and New Jersey that it can be done. We will win by bringing the moderates on the other side home. We did it in Virginia. We'll do it here.
This is the last race of the year. There are no other campaigns to work. No excuses. No distractions.
You all know the drill. You all know what to do. Break time is over. Let's get to work.
