We knew he was a jackass all along, but the opportunist, egotistical and not to mention greedy Stephen Harper, leader of the Conservative party in Canada and leader of the opposition, has earned the right to be the jackass of the day, but he didn't do it alone.
He had the help of Bloc Quebecois leader Gilles Duceppe and New Democrat Party Leader Jack Layton, a whore for attention himself. While it is just as easy to call these two out, Stephen is the man responsible for the motion which brought down the Liberal party government and forced a January election.
The former president of the Taxpayer's Federation of Canada, Harper has whored his influence and has alienated others (Belinda Stronach) with his unifying (confrontational) approach to leadership.
Harper's charisma, or lack thereof, is hardly Mulroneyesque, let along Diefenbaker-like. The truth is he is just another Preston Manning trying to pass himself off as another Ralph Klein. Even Ralph is standing clear of him.
A lot of Canadians were repulsed by his commercials which had policy discussions with fellow Conservative members of parliament which were so badly canned that you could see the teleprompter in their god-forsaken eyes. They were completely ineffective in gaining interest to the point where they might go the way of the Star Wars Holiday Special. No one who worked on it will admit to its existence, but I'm sure that there's someone who recorded it just for laughs.
But there's something a lot more sinister here. Gilles Duceppe has been wanting to take advantage of the sponsorship scandal, which has incensed Quebec separatists and Alberta, but was received with a bit of a ho-hum everywhere else. So this all plays totally in the hands of the Bloc Quebecois, a party which has become the federal beachead for Quebec separatists. It's almost like Sinn Fein getting seats in the UK house of commons, but a little more fanatical. At least Sinn Fein has accepted Northern Ireland's place in Britain.
So now the stage is set. The election is be in January and we will have to hope that a Liberal majority or a minority government returns to Canada. They still are the party best fit to form the government.
In the meantime, we at the Jackass of the Day have but one thing to say to Stephen Harper: enjoy the next few years of leading the opposition, JACKASS!
