In two diaries yesterday,
here and
here, details of dirty tricks by the GOP in King County, Washington (Seattle and environs) were recounted, and it was shown that they had disenfranchised at least 140 voters by having a GOP official swear under threat of perjury that she knew for a fact that the registered voters did not live at that address. I think the story is worse.
According to the Washington Secretary of State,
Elections and Voting FAQ's,(pdf) you can register to vote without a traditional address. Page 14 of the document states that those without a traditional address can use the address of a nearby public building to establish a precinct. Since the story is that the GrOPers went through the voting lists looking for the addresses of storage units and mailbox places, and tried to eliminate them, I wonder if they also tried to eliminate addresses such as those in City Hall, a church, etc. For that matter, I would understand a mailbox place, or a storage unit warehouse as a public building that could be used as an address for the homeless. That's where my friend who lives in a trailer that he moves every three days is registered.
In addition, the Address Confidentiality Program provides substitute addresses for those who are victims of stalking, domestic violence, and sexual assault. These people could be "outed" by the GOP attempts to "clean up the voter rolls."
The law and forms the GOP used were never meant for a mass clean-up of the voter rolls. They were meant for citizens to help weed out those who are living in Arizona, and voting in Washington, for example. Personally, I hope they do file umpteen counts of perjury on
