Bush spying on Americans is being fought the wrong way in the media wars!
Progressives, need to STOP focusing on the "small" issue (yes I know this is an assault on our rights) of Bush spying on Americans. Instead focus on the BIG over arching issue that will win us the white house.
I have been a big believer in " republican are against privacy" as a winning issue and as a WEDGE ISSUE. We let the issue become pro-choice versus pro-life, not PRO-PRIVACY versus ant-privacy. This issue needs to be tied into the larger theme of a republican assault on privacy.
Americans are AFRAID about a loss of privacy everywhere in their lives not just legally and in politics. FEAR drives wedge issues, "the war on privacy" is a wedge issue!

Americans are AFRAID about a loss of privacy everywhere in their lives not just legally and in politics. FEAR drives wedge issues, "the war on privacy" is a wedge issue! Progressives have been searching for the ONE big mistake that conservatives will make that will be our "impeachment" issue, wrong. We need to poll on this issue, that will insure coverage. The poll should read "does Bush spying on Americans add to your worries about a loss of privacy in America today?" Then ask "who do you believe will protect your right to privacy more Democrats or Republicans?"
Americans are afraid of how technology allows people to get so much information on their kids and on their personal lives. People are AFRAID, and FEAR DRIVES WEDGE ISSUES. "Abortion restrictions, sneak and peak, banks selling personal information, spying on Americans, company's allowed to use credit checks to hire workers, all a republican lead assault on your privacy." Should be the Progressive talking point.
The goal of progressives over the next 3 years is very simple WIN THE WEST. The western states have a strong civil libertarian disposition, they don't like Washington telling them what to do!. This worked for the Republicans for years when they used to believe in federalism. The "war on privacy" has a chance to pick-off White Western males from the Republican party . This along with a NON-XENAPHOBIC immigration policy will allow us to turn the west from red to blue but that's a story for another blog.
