At the end of every year when my modest bonus check crosses my desk, I usually write a few checks to the organizations that I feel deserve my hard-earned dough.
While some of these charities come and go from my list, The Human Rights Campaign (HRC) has always been a beneficiary of mine.
Not this year!
Not long ago, I received an email from HRC asking for donations to a group of candidates. One of these candidates is Lincoln Chafee, Republican of Rhode Island.
I grew up in Rhode Island in a small beach town called Narragansett. And while its been 20 years since I have lived there, I still have a soft spot in my heart for this smallest of all states.
And while Mr. Chafee may be a decent man and supportive of gay rights, my dollars will NOT go to helping HRC keep a Republican majority in the Senate.
A Republican majority means:
- Frist as Majority Leader.
- No investigations into a failed war.
- More tax cuts for the Rich and Powerful.
- Less money for the Poor and Needy.
- More Schiavo-like intrusions into our personal lives.
- More money and profits for Oil Companies.
- More bigoted conservative judges approved to lead the courts.
- And on and on and on the list goes...
So I am sorry HRC, you will have to obtain your objective of a Republican majority without my year-end donation. And as you make your year-end decisions, I hope you keep this message in mind.
Merry Christmas
Happy Chanukah
Happy Kwanza
And Happy New Year!
