I didn't see much being blogged on this. This article,
from the AP
I would not of thought that so many people would actively be against the long standing policy, but:
"According to a survey last month by Rasmussen Reports, a nonpartisan public opinion research firm, 49 percent of Americans favor ending birthright citizenship, and 41 percent favor keeping it. The margin of error was plus or minus 4 percentage points."
To give history of myself, my parents Immigrated to western Canada in the early fifties from Germany, where my 2 older brothers were born. In the early 60's they moved to the States, near Chicago, where my younger brother and I were born. Being that my parents legally entered legally, I would not be subject of this, but I still find it disturbing. It just seems to me that the ole-time tradition of finding a group of people to blame troubles on is being used. Why in this day and age we are talking about building fences is beyond me. Why is there not more talk about enforcing immigration laws that exist. Isn't it illegal to hire these people? There are no simple answers to this and I believe it will take a multi-prong approach, but this turn toward fear-mongering and fence-building seems extreme.
My parents filled me with appreciation of this country, that I believe immigrants can generally better understand then most Americans, many of whom, take it all for granted. My parents worked hard and contributed to this country as do the immigrants now. What is the difference? Is that there skin is brown? Would they have a better opputunity to immigrate legally if they were white?
