The Religious Right is not a religious movement. It is a political machine, a multiplatform apparatus bankrolled by ultraconservative billionaires and run by theocratic Christian ideologues and Reagan era New Right operatives.
As such, it's primary function is not the "saving of souls" but the promulgation of radical free-marketeer economic policies guised as Christian "family values."
Witness today's email blitz from James Dobson's Focus On the Family--a 4-page pdf titled "Beyond Our Generation--Questions and Answers About the President's Plan for Social Secuirty Reform". It can be found here: http://family.org/cforum/pdfs/fosi/government/BeyondOurGeneration.pdf
Dobson closes his missive by offering links to the Heritage Foundation, Cato and Club For Growth's Social Security Choice web page.
Further note that Tony Perkins, president of the Family Research Council--founded by Dobson--and Gary Bauer, American Values have also weighed in to back the Bush SS policy. In doing so, Bauer shamelessly reversed his position regards private accounts--he opposed them back in 1997.
Expect more of this--not only nationally, but at local and state levels through the State Policy Network that includes Dobson's 37 state "family councils".
