From the
Idaho Statesman moments ago:
The Senate rejected a constitutional amendment to enshrine a ban on gay marriage in the state constitution on Wednesday. The vote was 21-14, three votes shy of the two-thirds majority needed to approve the amendment and send it to the House. Supporters of the amendment said it's one of the most important issue facing Idaho and that voters have a right to decide the question. But opponents called it a waste of time and said there is no threat to Idaho's ban on gay marriage already contained in state law. Backers of the proposal said they are unsure whether they will continue to press the issue during the current legislative session, but they said they will at least try again next year to get the amendment approved.
This is a big deal, folks! Idaho is about as red as you can get, but legislators with backbone and conscience banded together to stuff this amendment into the trash heap where it belongs -- at least for another year.
As I get more info, I'll update this diary. But, damn, this is a good day in the Gem State!
UPDATE: Here's some updated links to the Spokesman-Review, Fox News and KTVB-TV in Boise. None of them have a lot of detail -- that'll come a little later, I imagine.
UPDATE #2: I wrote in the comments below that the vote to kill the amendment was 8 Repubs and 6 Dems. Julie at Red State Rebels says it was 7-7. She was there as it happened, I think, and will post an update soon.
