"'If you hand out contraception to single women, we're saying promiscuity is OK as a state, and I am not in support of that,' Phillips, R-Kansas City, said in an interview [with the AP]."
There are just so many things wrong with this person's thinking that it's hard to know where to start. I'd be tempted to ignore this ridiculous comment if not for the fact that some sorry SOB's put this guy in office.
I'm not sure where he thinks its the right of the state to involve itself in the private medical decisions between a woman and her doctor. Wouldn't it make more sense to fund reproductive education in the schools or to fund the clinics so that women who do not want to have children have all of the information they require? Apparently not.
As the very smart folks at firedoglake often say, the message here is if you're poor, you shouldn't have sex.
If they are serious about this, then lets take it to the next logical step. If women talk to doctors about contraceptive choices, then along with placing the doctor in jail, lets also jail the mother-to-be, who is, in effect contracting for the murder of a "life" (according to their definition).
This is what pro-choices forces should be asking those who are pushing for the complete restriction to needed healthcare options. Get them on the record about this and just watch the hypocrisy take off.
