Why is it considered acceptable for Bush to deny citizens the right to see him in public forums? Has an elected official ever so consistently denied so many constituants access to his public appearances?
Even going back to the Nixon Enemies List -- that was made up of famous outspoken anti-Nixon celebrities. Regular citizens weren't denied access.
The latest stories are that when when the White House sends out tickets to the event organizers, they include a list of specific local people who should be excluded.
Buzzflash has an
editorial about this today (as they do about once a week). It's short and to the point. And has links to several other articles about the subject.
But as upsetting as I think this trend is, it doesn't seem to be making any impact in the major print or television news sources. When Bush travels around the country bringing his message (this time about Social Security) he is speaking to people who are predisposed to support him no matter how foolishly. Yet these forums are reported to us as if they are Bush speaking to common citizens.
I can't say I'd like to see the man. But he's my president (supposedly) as much as anyone elses. And if I wanted to take my grandchildren to see the President, I don't know why I should be denied, just because I'm a Democrat.
As Democrats we must mention this outrage in every conversation, whatever forum.
