I went to the local ATM to save a few minutes' time and take money out, and noticed that it was run by Diebold. While Diebold is infamous for its election machines that can switch votes, they also are a major supplier of ATMs to the banking industry.
ATMs offer banks several ways to make money. The obvious revenue stream comes from the two transaction fees most people get charges when not using ATMs approved by the original bank. A second revenue stream comes from overdraft charges facilitated by ATM use. Also, it is less expensive for a bank to do a transaction remotely than it is to do the same transaction through a teller.
If customers stop using ATMs, banks lose money. If customers boycott Diebold ATMs, banks gain an incentive to use ATMs provided by other companies. It's also possible that Diebold would see a direct revenue stream reduced.
So I propose a boycott of Diebold ATMs. The boycott will be lifted when Diebold retrofits existing voting machines to offer a voter-verified paper ballot and ceases selling voting machines without this feature.
