Several Minutes Ago Harry Reid surrounded by the entire Senate Caucus delivered announced a letter to Frist on Nuclear option.
From the letter:
"Should the majority choose to break the rules that give us that right, the majority should not expect to receive cooperation from the minority in the conduct of Senate Business."
I think this is a mistake....
Reid, as the Senate Minority leader, should not be announcing that the Democratic minority will not be cooperating "in the conduct of Senate Business."
This makes it appear that the party will be obstructing the Senate.
Instead, Senators like Dayton and Sarbannes (both of whom are retiring) and those in "safe seats" and those not up for re-election until 2010 should be delivering the message that THEY will not be providing "unanimous consent" so that the GOP can railroad in bad judges and bad legislation should the GOP exercise the "nuclear option."
In other words, "obstruction" should be identified with individual Senators, and not the party --- The Dems should simply take the position that the rules are the rules, and the rules that respected the rights of the Republican minority when the Democrats were in charge -- and have served this nation well for over 200 years -- should not be changed now that the GOP is in the majority.
