Today in his column, David Brooks summed up the conservative view on, well, just about everything, but specifically on the Schiavo issue. That view is "we're moral, liberals aren't". He doesn't even believe we're immoral. He believes we're amoral.
From the article:
'Then, if social conservatives tried to push their moral claims, you'd find liberals accusing them of turning this country into a theocracy - which is an effort to cast all moral arguments beyond the realm of polite conversation.
Once moral argument is abandoned, there are no ethical checks, no universal standards, and everything is left to the convenience and sentiments of the individual survivors.'
I know that I am a fool for caring what people like David Brooks say about me, but I hear this insulting refrain repeated over and over again by conservatives. Apparantly anyone who disagrees with them on any issue does not just have a different moral view than them, but actually has no moral views whatsoever.
I am so mad at this idea that I can barely see straight. As a liberal, I have wrestled with difficult issues over the years, thought through my positions, questioned myself, developed my moral system through debate, discussion, and reflection. How dare he imply otherwise? How do they get away with saying this stuff?
Auuuggggggghhhhhhhhh!
