It is not by chance that the passages proceeding the events in Sodom have to do with Abraham's hospitality and the gifts of God bestowed on him for his gracious action. First we see hospitality and the way we should act, then inhospitality in that the people of Sodom seek to mistreat the newcomers. The biblical text itself seems to suggest that the sin is based in inhospitality.
Ezechiel 16:49-50 Now this was the sin of Sodom: She and her daughters were arrogant, overfed and unconcerned; they did not help the poor and needy. They were haughty and did detestable things before me. Therefore I did away with them as you have seen.
This Idea is supported in the Gospels when Christ compares an inhospitable reception to Sodom:
Matt: 10:14-15 If anyone will not welcome you or listen to your words, shake the dust off your feet when you leave that home or town. I tell you the truth, it will be more bearable for Sodom and Gomorrah on the day of judgment than for that town.
Nothing is mentioned here about homosexuality.
This story really begins with 9/11 and the Tower of Babel. Though God didn't actually smite the tower, the hubris of man to build it came under the notice of God and then man was made to be confounded in language. From that time on, there has indeed been a severe confounding with everything being turned upside down. Old people are no longer worthy of respect or dignity. Children are born into debt and slavery. And there is no mercy to be found in American government or religion now in the hands of capitalist slavers.
The story of Sodom is a rich one indeed. It tells of a city that has turned from God into licentiousness, greed, and depravity. The poor and needy are neglected and foreign travelers are treated with contempt. As the Bible also says, "pride goeth before a fall."
At present, American troops are in a place that has known war and conflict for 5000 years. The city of Nineveh-the capitol of Assyria--is very appropos for America. Of all the ancient civilizations, Assyria was the singularly most hated. It was brutal, militaristic, and only thought of conquest by the shock and awe method where people were skinned alive and sent in cages to the next town to show what awaited any that resisted. And even if they did not resist, the townspeople were brutalized.
Well, Babylon had had enough and made an alliance with Mede to the East of Babylon. Together, they laid siege to Nineveh, razing it to the ground, and then Assyria passed into forgotten history for 2200 years until its rediscovery in the 1800s.
In either case, Nineveh or Sodom, there is no Rapture for those who pretend faith in God, there is only the fire and brimstone of destruction that await them. Nor is there any mercy for those who have none in their hearts, for they shall be erased from the face of the earth. This is the fate that awaits America.
Lastly, the book of Revelations was about the downfall of Rome. But I guess they missed out on Bible lessons that day.
