Dan Rather's Last Day As CBS Anchor
Just watched the Rather retrospective on CBS....
Dan Rather was at every great news event in the past 40 years - JFK Assasination, The Civil Rights Movement, Watergate, Iran-Contra, Lewinsky, 9/11, etc - and one of the two final lines that struck me were:
"When they don't let a Reporter in, they're not letting YOU, the Citizen in..."
"I just want to be remembered as a great reporter."
There is something magical and inspiring about a man who has such dedication to a field. I know a News Producer in his 70s (same age as Rather), that has the same passion and curiosity for News that he probably had when he first started in his 20s. He just wants to get to the location, break down the door, and tell you what just happened and why it's important.
In this period, which "mark my words" will be seen as bubble in the field of journalism - when reporters and news agencies were afraid to speak truth to power - we can think about what we will do when it's all over. And one of the men we will look to is Dan Rather.
Sure we'll remember the Killian Memos, but we should also consider that he was probably conned. Why were the memos given to a Mapes, the same woman who broke the Abu Ghraib Prison scandal? You know what - it was revenge, pure and simple. Watch a movie called Bush's Brain - and you will see who Rove really is, and why he is smart enough to have pulled it off.
Regardless of what you think of Rove, he is a true political genius, on the same level as Machievelli, and history will see that Rove not only brought in Bush...
He also took out Rather. There are BILLIONS of dollars riding on who wins the Presidency, anyone who doubts how clever a man can be when greed and money are involved hasn't tried to deeply look into the heart of mankind.
But don't worry friends - Rather's last word to all of us for now and the future - keep it in your hearts:
COURAGE!
