We're all understandably nervous about anyone that Bush might nominate. But having actually met and spoken with Judge Roberts recently, I'm feeling OK about this.
I found him to be extremely thoughtful, and very conscious of his role as a judge, not approaching cases as a chance to validate his own personal views. Frankly, I liked him, based on the half hour my group got to speak with him. (No, I didn't see into his heart...)
I also have a number of colleagues and acquaintances who know him well from his days at Hogan and Hartson, and even the liberals have nothing but praise and respect for him. To a one, they all said that they would feel good about him being on the Court.
More after the break...
I'm not saying we should roll over. But my first impression is that we could have done a hell of a lot worse.
Update [2005-7-19 21:57:11 by DCBlues]: I met Judge Roberts when the firm I'm with for the summer took the summer associates to the D.C. Circuit Court to meet with Judges Roberts and Tatel. For the record, I don't have to prove my liberal credentials to anyone, and I don't intend to apologize for respecting someone I disagree with. Rove and Bush are total dishonest pigs, no doubt. Roberts might be like that, but I don't think so. I'm simply saying that I think he's better than most of the people we could realistically have gotten.
