According to CBS news correspondent Mark Strassman, Alabama Republican lawmaker Gerald Allen thinks he knows what's best for everyone and has proposed a bill that would ban public school libraries from buying new copies of books or plays by gay authors or about gay characters.
A particularly juicy quote CBS features is, "It's not healthy for America, it doesn't fit what we stand for. And they will do whatever it takes to reach their goal." Apparently, Allen is referring to the nefarious but unfounded homosexual agenda.
So, books by Gore Vidal, Tennessee Williams, Alice Walker, Truman Capote and others are under attack. Hmm, I'm a heterosexual female and I've read books by these authors.
Allen, of course, doesn't see anything wrong with his oh-so-moral bill. "I look at it as protecting the hearts and souls and minds of our children."
Let me get this straight, "The Color Purple" is bad because it could promote lesbian behaviour, but wingnuts don't give a rat's ass about the book's character enduring horrible domestic abuse. Mr. Allen, let me worry about
my children.
