Armando claims: "In the calm rational debate ongoing in this thread, I notice that many commenters are operating under a misapprehension- that the Democratic candidates in this race are NOT pro-choice. These commenters are misinformed. All announced Democratic candidates in this race are strongly pro-choice"
Here's what we actually know:
When Rhode Island passed a partial birth abortion ban, one which contained no exceptions for the health of the mother, would have banned some standard D&E's, and would have given fathers and the mother's parents the right to sue doctors for performing abortions without their consent, Sheldon Whitehouse took what the district court described as "Herculean" efforts to support the law, advancing "ever-shifting" arguments "thrashing about like swimmers adrift in a shark-infested lagoon" to defend a clearly unconstitutional law.
According to the district court, this law was "unrestrained and pernicious to the Constitution" and would "strangle constitutional rights," and never "definitively distinguish[ed] a conventional abortion from what [Whitehouse] would prosecute."
DCT opinion,
1st Circuit affirmance.
I have seen no evidence of Whitehouse actually doing anything to support the pro-choice cause. Just Armando's say-so. On Brown, he apparently says he is, but he's never had to take a stand, so far as I can tell.
Meanwhile, how courageously pro-choice is Chafee? He voted against the federal partial birth ban and even opposed the "unborn victims of violence" act. He has co-sponsored the Prevention First Act and the Equity in Prescription Insurance and Contraceptive Coverage Act, and has a 100% rating from Planned Parenthood.
Give me evidence of anything pro-choice Whitehouse or Brown has ever voted for, promised or done.
If NARAL can't support Chafee, then it should never support a single Republican. C'mon.
