After hours of watching banal ideas brought up
to the desk of the commerce-energy joint
conference, each idea reporting to help
America, defend the nation, close a gap,
right a wrong, be good for all, one good
man puts forward an idea worthy of allowing
him to be called The Honorable Gentleman
from Massachusetts.
The simple amendment he asked to have
included into the bloated energy bill would
only disallow foreign companies that are owned
or controlled by restrictive governments from
buying a controlling interest in a US gas or
electric utility. It sounded like a no-brainer to me
with all the talk and money spent on security
for the nation.
Each week we get a new speech about how
this heavy great black painted bird is worth
its weight in gold, and the dingus costs us
about as much as if it were. Now along comes
a mild mannered man with a simple amendment
that would cost NOTHING, would NEVER harm
a US company or taxpayer, would NEVER slow
or impede fair international trade or expansion.
All his amendment would do is ask the government
to protect the US from people who might seek to
do us harm or use our markets while having theirs
closed to us. We are spending billions for protection
in small and medium sized towns whose only real
threat is the drug culture that is not being addressed.
We have armed men searching poor commuters in NYC
subways and I can't wear my good shoes on a flight
because in my old age it's too hard to try to bend
over and tie them. This and so much more we
have gladly given to the war on terror, but it brings
my whole mind to a halt when this simple amendment
is rejected. I think Mr Markey has brought forward
the best idea I've heard this year and you would hope
the people who SAY they want us safe would at least
study his idea instead of just rejecting it. irsouth2
