The only reason Colin Powell was on The Dailiy Show was to discredit the Downing Street Memo.
Which he did.
Jon didn't get it, which is unfortunate. He seemed so impressed that they actually "got" him to come on the show.
Bowel said he had dinner with Bush just last week. Gee, what do you think they talked about? Just two guys with nothing better to do having dinner for old times' sake?
No, you can bet your ass it was an "oh shit, what do we do about the Downing Street Memo" kind of dinner.
Powell volunteers to go on The Daily Show and pooh-pooh the DSM. Which he does.
Jon doesn't get it.
And what I don't get -- why didn't Jon confront him with the videotape we saw in Fahrenheit 9/11, which is on the State Department's own website, where Powell said in 2001 that Saddam Hussein was contained, that he was not a threat to his neighbors, and that the containment had worked.
He could have showed that video to Bowel and said "who's telling the truth here? The Colin Powell sitting next to me, or the Colin Powell on the videotape?"
It was a sad, ugly performance by the war criminal and liar.
Hm, I just looked up the url for Colin Powell's 2001 statement and discovered the State Department had scrubbed Colin Powell's statements (the one seen in F9/11) from their website. It used to be here:
http://www.state.gov/secretary/rm/2001/933.htm
Now it's a 404. Gee, what a surprise!!
