There's a spiritual we used to sing at Vacation Bible School when I was little, All God's Chillen Got Shoes. There was a part where we used to sing 'everybody talkin' 'bout heaven ain't going there'... So when I read about what happened to a UCC congregation in Virginia in a
Ruminate This post I remember being that little child and wondering what that meant. Well, now I know. We have people walking the streets of our cities and towns, professing that Jesus Christ is Lord, who believe it's OK to torch churces because of their DENOMINATIONS stance on gay marriage. Jesus had a word for people like that...hypocrites.
My friends who are non-believers used to kid me about the rapture by reminding me that the wing-nut Christians would be my new soulmates for eternity while they would consider it a blessing to be left here in agnostic peace on earth. Lately, I'm not so sure they are right. Because, some of these folks are so unclear on the concept of God's mercy and salvation that it's hard for me to believe they are going anywhere near where Jesus is, or ever will be. They won't like the company he keeps.
I am one of the people who believes that Jesus will come again. I don't pretend to know when or how. It might turn out to be a grand Tim LaHaye/Jerry B. Jenkins fantasy, or it might be what Jesus said about coming like a thief in the night. But I do expect that when He comes again, the first people who will hear of it will be all those gay and lesbian Christians who have kept their faith in the face of persecution from inside and outside the Church.
