The
Conservative Caucus, whoever they are, is attempting to build momentum for Bush to nominate Roy Moore to the court. For those of you who don't remember, Moore is the former Chief Justice of the Alabama Supreme Court--the infamous "Ten Commandments judge.
Of course, the text accompanying the petition posits Clarence Thomas as the best member of the current court, pretty much proving that we're talking right-wing whack jobs here. But even the though that Moore might get nominated is enough to chill the blood in your veins.
more below the fold . . .
Moore placed a 2.6 ton Ten Commandments monument in the rotunda of the state judicial building. Not surprisingly, someone challeneged it. When a federal judge ordered him to remove it, Moore refused, resulting in
being removed from office. It was a circus of the higest order.
(Interestingly enough, then-attorney general William Pryor acted as prosecutor on the case.)
These people frighten me. I've discussed the Moore case with a lot of people, on a lot of boards, and there are a lot of conservatives in Alabama who were glad when Moore was removed. These people, on the other hand, want nothing less then a Cromwell-like theocracy.
Of course, these are the people who got Bush elected.
That said, Moore is quite possibly the worst possible nominee Bush could make. It would guarantee a filibuster, and Moore's own infamy would make it all but impossible to paint the Democrats as obstructionists.
So, Bush just might do it, whip everyone into a frenzy, then get Moore to withdraw and then slip in an equally conservative but not as obviously psychotic ringer.
Man, I've gotta stop hitting that paranoia-laced Kool-Aid in the mornings . . .
