The Rove investigation is, rightly, taking the cake for news this week, but there's another investigation that's very important and is
finally yielding results.
Feeling stymied in his investigation of the California National Guard's controversial intelligence unit, a state senator Tuesday persuaded a powerful legislative panel to subpoena documents and one witness to further his probe. . . .
Dunn, D-Garden Grove, has been investigating the National Guard's creation of a special intelligence unit with ``broad authority'' to monitor potential terrorist threats. The unit's existence, first revealed in the Mercury News, has raised concerns that the Guard might be laying the groundwork for a new domestic spying operation.
What's the Guard been up too, other than fighing Bush's War in Iraq?
The Mercury News previously obtained Guard e-mails showing high-level interest in a Mother's Day anti-war rally organized by the Peninsula Raging Grannies, CodePink and family members of soldiers who have died in Iraq. At the time, Guard officials said the monitoring amounted to watching television reports about the rally. . . .
In addition, Dunn is broadening his probe to cover allegations that the Guard might be on a ``witch hunt'' against whistle-blowers and that some officials may have misused state and federal resources.
