State Rep.
David Law (R-West Bloomfield)
got busted for drunk driving in Berkley early Wednesday morning. It's especially bad for him because:
Law was among a group of state lawmakers who recently introduced legislation aimed at cracking down on drunken driving. He introduced a bill that would allow preliminary breath tests to be admitted as evidence in certain criminal cases. It is awaiting a committee hearing.
What are the political ramifications of Rep. Law's extreme hypocrisy? Well, here's what Practical Political Consulting numbers guru Alan Fox
had to say last month about Law's outlook for '06:
(Law) was elected in 2004 with about 53 ½ percent of the vote while Bush was getting less than 49% of the vote. He ran ahead of the baseline. I don't think that was a seat that Democrats targeted in any way. So if there's a strong Democratic candidate this time running against a first-term incumbent Republican, that might be a possibility. I haven't heard it listed at the top of the charts, but that's certainly one to watch out for.
Acting on my own solemn authority, I hereby pronounce this seat up for grabs.
Now if we can only find a candidate. Anyone? Anyone?
One more thing. Law got popped at 2:30AM on Wednesday. Yet the Berkley police chief didn't tell anyone until Friday (the news graveyard)? What's up with that? Did he get special treatment because he's a Rep and a former prosecutor? Enquiring minds want to know.
