Sorry. No Rove here, or Roberts. All I've got right now is a simplistic idea that would go towards explaining our progressive stance against the PATRIOT Act and all its un-American offspring in a way that right-wingers can easily understand.
Most pro-PATRIOT Act folks, when faced with our deeply felt grievances against the overhanded tactics and the possibilities of abuse, will say simply, "Well, if you've done nothing wrong, you have nothing to hide!" What we see as the terrible potential to violate our privacy and rights to assembly, etc. they see as necessary, and believe our rights would never be abused. They oversimplify by saying "If you're clean, you won't be messed with."
I think one possible way to combat this line of thinking is to apply the same set of logic and reasoning to gun control. The rightest of the right will tolerate NO infringements whatsoever on their right to bear arms, and they'll fight tooth and nail anything that won't let them get whatever firearm they want, precisely when they want it. They oppose background checks fervently. I ask, simply, why oppose background checks? If you've done nothing wrong, you've got nothing to hide. What's a little dip into your personal life if you're a clean, upstanding citizen?
