Being upfront, I sincerely hope Patrick Fitzgerald nails the guilty in the Bush Administration for their respective Plame-gate perversions. Not too many things would thrill me more than seeing the obnoxious, arrogant, faux-religionist/moralist bullies receive their just desserts.
However, and this is what separates myself from some on the blogging left and, as I have sadly noticed, many on the right in the world of blogging: I have no qualms about Patrick Fitzgerald also going after any possible mis-doings by Democratic Chicago Mayor Richard M. Daley and his cronies.
I support any prosecutor who shades neither left or right but operates by the standards of right and wrong. An equal opportunity prosecutor.
Yes, it certainly happens and will continue to do so but there is simply is no justification for political partisanship or skewing in cases of lawbreaking, It's wrong.
When Clinton administration official Sandy Berger was caught removing sensitive government documents a while back, he deserved to be charged. Absolutely. Those on the blogging left who attempted to somehow minimize or absolve Berger of his efforts were wrong. Of course, many on the right joined an electronic lynching. Berger has subsequently pleaded guilty to misdemeanor theft of classified documents. He will be sentenced in September.
When Fitzgerald announces his Plame-gate findings and how he will legally proceed, the blogging partisanship will unfortunately break out yet again. Expectations are that most of the left will joyously exult and the majority of the right will do their minimization best. I will be happy that an accused criminal or criminals will be charged and finally have to answer for any respective mis-doings. I will be happy that he/she/they get their day in court. That the most powerful in this land cannot exclude themselves from the boundaries of the law will be reassuring. That the rule of law still prevails in this country should bring satisfaction to everyone--but it won't.
Again, that is wrong.
I say, Patrick Fitzgerald for the next Attorney General in whatever administration is in power. He's nobody's handmaiden. As it should be
