India and Pakistan agree to extend two-year-old Kashmir ceasefire

LONG-time rivals India and Pakistan agreed yesterday to continue a two-year-old ceasefire in disputed Kashmir, but did not discuss the question of reducing their massive military presence there.
Delegates at talks also agreed not to develop any new guard posts or defence instalments along the cease-fire line that divides Kashmir between the two nuclear-armed countries, which both claim the entire Himalayan territory, Navtej Sarna, of the Indian external affairs ministry, said.
Both sides "reaffirmed their commitment to uphold the ongoing ceasefire," and agreed not to violate each other's air space, he added.
The article goes on to point out:
In 2003, India and Pakistan agreed on a truce along the disputed ceasefire line, dividing Kashmir between them as part of peace efforts.
Before that, the two armies routinely exchanged fire with artillery, mortars and guns, causing almost daily casualties.
India-Pakistan relations have warmed since January last year, after the two countries' leaders started a peace dialogue. However, the two sides have made few moves toward resolving their competing claims to Kashmir - the dispute at the heart of their rivalry - despite significant progress on other fronts.
Hey, it may not sound like much. But at this point, I'll take all the good news I can get.
