I haven't heard a peep on the Diaries page so I thought I'd offer a link and some commentary concerning last night's
60 Minutes 2 broadcast on commercial media CBS.
The piece in question was called "3 Soldiers. It focused on the personal side of three US soldiers, all of whom were killed in Iraq.
(CBS) It's been nearly a year since the invasion of Iraq. And in a major troop rotation, thousands of Americans are coming home, and new troops are going in.
Over the year, you've probably noticed those lists in the newspaper -- the lists of the dead. Some days, they just have a couple of names. Other days, more. They note the age, unit and hometown.
But of course, there's so much more that's unsaid. 60 Minutes II wondered who those Americans were, and wondered about the sacrifice and the people left behind.
Worth a read and was a powerful piece of television. I've been a little surprised that 60 Minutes 1 or 2 has run exposes on Iraq seemingly every week for a while now. I guess Don Hewitt has the ear of enough people to get the truth out. 60 Minutes (1 or 2) also had an excellent piece about how pitiful the US training of the Iraqi police force was - and how dangerous it was for the Iraqis. In fact, the featured police HQ during the piece was blown to pieces a few days later.
p.s. the entire transcript is available at that link. Brought a tear to my eye and I spend my day with cynical battle hardened police.
