I get to check DKos maybe 2 or 3 times a day, and can't always read all the front page articles, so forgive me if this has been diaried before. But...
We need to understand how serious William Bennett's comments about 'aborting all black babies' is. William Bennett is nothing short of in violation of Resolution 260 (III) of the United Nations article banning genocide.
The relevant bits:
Article 2
"In the present Convention, genocide means any of the following acts committed with intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnical, racial or religious group, as such:"
...
"(d) Imposing measures intended to prevent births within the group;"
Article 3
The following acts shall be punishable:
...
(c) Direct and public incitement to commit genocide;
I do not think this is hyperbole, and the coming comparision to Nazis in this case is entirely appropriate. Prefacing it with 'an impossible, ridiculous and morally reprehensible thing to do..." is meaningless. I'm sure you can find any number of quotes or musings by Nazis finding moral discomfort with the act of killing Jews, but still accepting it's necessity and purpose. There is a concept of 'military necessity', where you must commit acts you may find morally reprehensible to further a greater cause. Perhaps in Bennett's mind, aborting black babies is wrong and reprehensible, but does he feel 'military necessity' requires it? This is left in doubt.
Bennett should not get away with calls to 'apologize' for 'unfortunate' or 'insensitive' comments. He should be called on exactly what he did - advocate the commission of genocide against African Americans in the United States. This is very serious and in absolutely no way excusable. The holocaust against the Jews began with comments more benign than this. I know due to political realities we will never see Bennett in front of a UN tribunal, but not only should his public career be ended, the man shouldn't be able to show his face in public.
