I have been frustrated over the past few years at the lack of social awareness and commentary in our music. Between getting Dixie Chicked or Britney Speared (innundated with consumerist pop drivel), criticising government has been taboo under the Bush Administration. Radio and Music Video have been killed by the monopolistic companies who impose playlists out of sync with the society to whom they are trying to sell a "lifestyle" of narcisistic consumerism. Maybe Katrina will change that. Maybe the internet will kill the video star. We shall see.
The point of this diary is to highlight one creative effort to call Bush out over his handling of Katrina that you should hear. Inspired by, and including samples of, Kanye West's now famous Bush quote as well as parts of West's "Gold Digger" track. It is worth a listen.
