For too long, the Beltway Dems have been in the pocket of one of our country's most powerful special interests -- $5/hour day laborers. Instead of getting tough on these freeloading parasites and building a wall along the Rio Grande, or tossing them out of the country, the Vichy Dems have been happy to let them have their way.
Hoo-rah! Thank God for Paul Hackett! While losers like Sherrod Brown spent yesterday whining about pussy issues like higher ed costs and prescription drug prices, Paul Hackett took the opportunity to make a firm stand in favor of deporting undocumented immigrants.
Someone then asked about illegal immigrants. The Bush administration, Mr. Hackett said, "is willing to let illegals come in and take the jobs of Americans."
The answer made several of the young Democrats squirm in their seats. One pushed Mr. Hackett to clarify. "Deport them?" Mr. Hackett was asked.
"If we can afford to," Mr. Hackett said, "yeah."
The original questioner began to speak about the racism of Hispanics against whites. Mr. Hackett stood silently.
That's the kind of ballsy leadership the Vichy Dems have been missing in the Senate -- someone who isn't afraid to point fingers at the most defenseless workers in the USA. You won't see Sherrod Brown taking on the day laborer lobby. He doesn't have the guts. In fact, Brown probably would have answered that question by claiming that the real problem is the employers who exploit immigrant labor.
And instead of stoically "standing silently" while an audience member spoke truth to power about Hispanic racism, Brown probably would challenged that fine citizen, and tried to explain that Hispanic racism is about as serious a problem in our country as the Red Menace.
You see, unlike Sherrod Brown, Paul Hackett will bring a new spirit to the Senate Dem caucus -- the spirit of mid-'80's Buchananism. Hoo-rah!
