I know there's been a lot of resistance on DKos towards any sort of boycott of Google. What we're working on is a one-day action to show Google that America -- especially Google's most loyal customers -- will not stand by while Google blocks people inside Tibet and China from having access to true information about democracy, human rights, and what's going on in the free world.
It was revealed this week that Yahoo provided the Chinese government with information about Li Zhi, a cyber-dissident and democracy advocate, that put him in jail for seven years. His only crime was wanting to join the banned Chinese Democratic Party and railing against corruption of local government officials in online discussion groups. There has rightly been a great outcry in the blogosphere at Yahoo, particularly because this is the second time their snitching put someone in jail for what amount to thought crimes.
I, and people like me at Students for a Free Tibet, am protesting Google's partnership now in the hope that Google will know to do the right thing when the Chinese government goes to ask them for the search records of a Tibetan who supports independence or a Chinese democracy advocate. If we don't speak up now, Google will some day bow to the pressure of the Chinese government just like Yahoo.
