The call to get out of Iraq has been heartfelt and meaningful, but to me it seems that we do need to fix what is broken, and our US leadership is not the answer. From the beginning of the war UN involvement has been lacking and sorely needed. What we need to be calling for now is to go to the UN and give them the leadership position on this mess that they should have had to begin with.
By calling for UN supervision we can accomplish all of the following things...
We can provide a positive and responsive answer as to what to do about Iraq. We can put a spotlight on the criminal action this administration committed by bypassing the UN and ignoring that body's conclusions about WMDs. We can piss off the koolaid drinkers on the far right who wish for the UN to be disbanded.
With enough pressure the UN might even be in charge eventually. If that happened, the occupying authority would no longer be the administration that caused the problem to begin with, we would still be involved but we would not be the focus of dissent, and we would effectively be blocked from expanding the conflict throughout the region.
I am very concerned about the half dozen super bases that have been built in Iraq. Iraq is not our territory and we do not have a right to take their land. The cities that need to be built up in Iraq are the ones the Iraqis live in, and not a launching point for expanding the war. These cities need to be turned over to the UN, and turned to bases for the benefit of the Iraqis. The sectarian violence and civil war raging in Iraq shows that we cannot make Iraq a solvent nation by wishing it and leaving them to take care of themselves. Empowering the United Nations is the answer and always has been. This needs to be demanded at every opportunity and forced to the front burner.
My 2 cents. And yours...
