I'm so confused...according to recent polls, 8 out of 10 Democrats think that going into Iraq was a mistake and more than 3 out of 5 want us to get out, never mind waiting for the Iraqis to stand up.
And yet?
Anti-war and anti-Bush fervor is growing among rank and file Democrats, threatening to pull the party to the left and creating a rift between increasingly belligerent activists and the party's leaders in Washington.
Anti, anti, fervor, threatening, creating a rift and belligerent...that's us. Perhaps a rewrite is in order? Maybe something like:
More than three years after being misled into a war of choice by an administration whose arrogance and incompetence in waging this war has us bogged down in a quagmire of disastrous proportions, a vast majority of Democrats are demanding that their Party leaders stand up and represent the people who elected them.
Much better...after all, this is the reality-based community.
It seems that the outside-the-beltway Democrats (that's us) have some crazy notion that our Party leaders should represent our views and come out against this war, that this president should be investigated and if appropriate, censured or impeached.
Let's recap: We recognize that this war was a mistake. We believe the President of the United States should respect the Constitution and follow the law. We think that our elected officials should represent our will. And all of this makes us belligerent activists whose anti-Bush animus is causing a rift within the Party. And why are our leaders fighting us? Because:
...admitting a crucial mistake, not to mention coming out in direct opposition to the war, could scare politicians who fear that opposing even an unpopular war could be seen as being anti-military.
Which part of 8 out of 10 Democrats thinking this war was a mistake are they missing? What exactly are our Democratic leaders afraid of? Agreeing with Democrats?
