I was watching the Tonight Show a little while ago, when Jay Leno announced his guests for the Wednesday night. When he said the name "Ann Coulter," my stomach tightened -- and a very audible, collective BOO rose from the audience!
Leno defended his choice -- saying that he wanted to hear what she had to say. I say, we
know what she has to say, and it's all vile and it's all hateful.
I'd like him to understand the consequences of his choice. I do not believe that hate speech (the only kind of speech that seem to spew from her mouth) should be given such a far reaching, public forum. Right after I finish typing this, I'm going to send an email to the Tonight Show (TheTonightShow@nbc.com)that says I'm going to go to bed early Wednesday night and boycotting Wednesday's show because of the presence of Ann Coulter. I hope you will do the same.
Both are pimping themselves: she is pushing a book; he's looking for the ratings bump that comes from having a controversial guest. She might be beyond redemption, but I hope he is not. Let's show him what happens when he invites the hateful, self-absorbed people to speak on his show: people turn away -- in droves!
Wouldn't it be great if we flexed our collective muscle, and the ratings for that show were significantly low? Come on -- we can do it!! You've got all day Tuesday and Wednesday to find a good book to read during that time slot!! Start searching the library database! :)
Stay strong!
