Turnabout is fair play. The Republicans have chosen this week to showcase an amendment to the U.S. Constitution that will limit free speech for those who show disrespect for the American flag. This is a brazen attempt to use emotion and nationalism to rally their base.
It's time to turn the tables on the Republicans by adding a small amendment to the flag amendment that will cause it to backfire on the Republicans.
Currently the amendment reads:
"The Congress shall have power to prohibit the physical desecration of the flag of the United States."
I would suggest that the Democrats in Congress can turn the tables by proposing a vote to add the following line to the amendment before the final vote on the amendment itself:
"...Displays of flags of the Confederate States of America may be considered a descration of the flag of the United States under this amendment."
Of course, free speech should not be restricted in either case. But how many Republicans are willing to ban the offensive racist speech of some of their own supporters? Let's make this amendment about them and not about the Democrats.
