His words of wisdom are hidden behind the Times firewall & arrived in my home via this mornings Az Daily Star. My home in Tucson which is the collegiate softball home to champions on two levels - the University of Arizona, division 1 NCAA champs & Pima College, queens of division 1 junior colleges. For the record, the UofA softball team regularly outdraws the baseball team.
So why is it so important to cling to the myth behind Title IX: That women need sports as much as men do?
I don't know about any sort of "need" for sports built into our DNA, but I have some experience with a daughter who plays softball. The benefits of her participation in athletic programs both school & club have been tremendous in many ways. It is the benefits of women's athletics to the female student that must be equally available. Nobody is expecting to see a 25 million dollar shortstop in softball anytime soon, but please don't try to kick the girls off the court because the boys need to play. It is their court too.
