I have been asked several times how many
Mormons there are on dKos, but I don't have an answer. All I know is that our numbers are growing. While we may be wildly different in our specific religious commintments (I am measured "conservative" by most accounts), we all share a deep love for this country and a desire to see it brought back on track. Some of us are life-long Democrats (myself included), others are recent converts (no pun intended) to the Democratic cause.
Mormon Kossacks, please count yourself in the poll and, if you feel comfortable enough, introduce yourself in the comments (my own introduction below the fold).
If you're a Mormon and are experimenting with Daily Kos, let me say welcome. You are not alone.
Nice to meet you. Call me Flërnk (the "ër" is pronounced "air"). Until quite recently, I believed I was an enigma - socially conservative and politically progressive - A Mormon Democrat. I am one of the growing minority within the religious community who recognize how thouroghly un-Christian the neo-con movement is. I have been disappointed (to put it mildly) that the Rubulican party has hijacked religion generally and Christianity specifically.
However, over the last few years I have found more and more Democrats like me. Perhaps religious people are losing their fear of agreeing with the Democratic party, maybe more religious people are recognizing how hypocritical the Republicans have become, or it could be as simple as finding a voice for peace in a sea of war - whatever the reason, we're growing. Mormons specifically have begun creeping out from under the Red blanket that has covered us for far too long (Harry Reid is a perfect example).
I recognize that I am more conservative than many of my Democratic counter-parts, but that is also why I love this party. There is no prerequisite for joining the party - it really is the party of the people. It is our willingness to work together despite (or because of?) our diversity that gives us strength (Ned Lamont's wonderful primary illustrates this).
I am enthusiastic about the future of this country. I am grateful for this wonderful site which has been such an amazing catalyst in bringing people together to find common ground, a common voice, and a clear message. I'm excited to be a part of it.
So, welcome Mormon visitors. Thank you for coming. We hope you enjoy your stay.
