I spent the day volunteering for Larry Grant's campaign for Idaho 1st Congressional district. Normally I do data entry putting people into various databases so that other people can then use the information I have input for furthering the cause of getting a democrat elected to Congress from Idaho. Lost cause, I know. Well most of the time, but this year is different. We have an opponent who is batshit insane conservative who even the Republicans in Idaho don't like and a great moderate candidate with a solid reputation and native Idaho roots.
More in a bit.
Today I started out washing windows. They were dirty and the floor needed vacuuming. Busy office and there isn't a lot of time for cleanliness, but I came in early to clean up the place and make it presentable. Next week we're having an open house where people can come in and meet Larry, ask him questions, and get yard signs and bumper stickers.
Before I got very far into cleaning I was given another chore. Go through a large stack of old newspapers and find articles that highlighted what was wrong with this Republican control of government for so commercial work later. While I went through a year of the low points of the Bush administration, I listened to the various people calling for Larry Grant and the Democratic party in Idaho.
From my side of the eavesdropping it sounded good. People seemed to be looking forward to helping us take back the government and if Idaho is starting to crack even a little the rest of the country must be ready for a tsunami to overwhelm the Republicans.
What I found in looking at a years worth of papers is that Iraq hasn't changed at all in the last year. There are constant bombings and sectarian conflict. The environment is being ravaged by corporations, while Bush denies Global Warming. The economy is constantly hurting working Americans, while the corporations reap the profits. It is clear by looking at everything that has gone on that change isn't just needed, it is vital to the future of the Republic. We are heading down a dark path if the Republicans keep in power. Every little bit we do is important and necessary.
I don't do much, just volunteer one day a week. It's something that everyone could do and they really have lots of things that need to be done. Everyone who can should go find a local campaign to help out, even if it's only for a couple hours a week. And if you like talking on the phone, they will love you.
There also are a mother cat and her baby living out back of the office that has been adopted by the campaign manager. Next week I'm bringing my camera so I can share the Democratic pootie picks.
Now for the money pitch.
Larry Grant's contribution page.
The Act Blue page of which he is a new member.
And if you live in or near the the 1st Congressional district: volunteer in person.
