Just when you thought it couldn't get any more inane, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram opened coverage of the campaign season today by covering Sen. Kay Hutchison's meeting with American Idol Kelly Clarkson, who praised Sen. Hutchison by saying, "You smell great."
Looks like we're in for substantive coverage of the issues, with meaningful dialogue and debate from the D.C. press corps.

Texas' senior senator responded to the puff, praising Clarkson by saying, "Mostly, I'm proud that she has kept her feet on the ground and head on her shoulders, very squared away."
Kept her head on her shoulders? Kept her head squared away? Huh???
Investigative journalist Dave Montgomery concluded this news report in the paper's September 7 national news section by quoting Clarkson's advice to the senator: "Keep wearing whatever you're wearing. That smells good."
Montgomery must either be mortified at having to cover this junk (doubtful--he's avoided us each time we've visited DC), or trying to show that there's no longer any need to even pretend: his real job is to write the pieces and get them into print that will get KBH re-elected.
Barbara Ann of course addressed the odor issue: "Hutchison's fluffy. She can't discuss important issues. She's afraid to debate me. She hides behind fluffy press conferences hoping no one will raise a stink about the real issues.
"After my five hundred campaign trips throughout Texas, I believe Texans are instead concerned about waste of their tax dollars, corruption, and the failure of Congress to address immigration, education, health care, transportation, and veterans' affairs."
What's next?
