Ok, it is sufficient to say that the issue of flag-burning is an old one -- however, I was reminded of it's extreme relevence a few days ago. You see I, like most college students, love pizza. Actually, love does not even begin to describe my feelings towards pizza, my feelings towards pizza transcend mere Earthly love. Pizza is my souls food.
I am fortunate as well, I got the opportunity to eat a lot of pizza from a magnificent restaurant. Or at least I had the opportunity until very recently, I can no longer purchase food there due to my conscience. I ordered a pizza a couple days ago, and what greeted my eyes? A Motherfucking flag on top of my Motherfucking Pizza Box!
More Below the Fold...
I stared at it in shock, and my initial reaction was "Why is there a flag on my pizza box?". My second reaction was one of anger "and the Republicans tell me that
I desecrate the flag?".
As it turns out, my friendly little pizzeria was run by Conservative hypocrits. Normally, I could dismiss this hyper-patriotism as general "I should be patriotic around September 11th" idiocy, but I know these people. They have Bush/Cheney bumper stickers on the back of their delivery car.
I can honestly say now that if the Republicans want to talk about flag desecration, they should look in the mirror. There were 6 flag burnings reported in 2003 according to The Citizen's Flag Alliance ( http://www.cfa-inc.org/...) and that number can't have gone up very much in the interim. Conversely, think about my pizza boxes... Those things are mass produced in some plant, in Somewhere USA -- or more likely China, where all American flags are made. Now, the surplus ones go in the trash, the ones that are used go in the trash, and the ones that go in the trash end up in land fills after sitting in dumpsters and being rained on, soaked, and otherwise "desecrated".
Or as an even better example, what about American Flag boxer shorts? Yes, nothing says "I love my flag" like letting the sweat from my balls soak it after a long day of walking/running around in 85+ degree weather.
So maybe, just maybe anyone who wants to talk about flag desecration should take a long hard look in the mirror. Instead of persecuting political speech that uses the flag, they should crack down on the real -- legitimate, desecrations of one of the most highly regarded symbols of our country.
That's all I ask...
But in the meantime: Please, take the Goddamned flag of my Goddamned Pizza Box. It doesn't belong there, and people like my World War II POW neighbor didn't fight to defend our freedom from real evil to see it treated the way it is today.
PS. The flag doesn't stand for torture either. I just had to stick that in here.
