I'd like to see an ad without any fancy scenery or staging per se...just Lamont speaking to the camera, speaking to viewers and saying something like (fact checked for accuracy, of course):
On September 28, Joe Lieberman voted to condone torture. He voted to strip prisoners of their right to a trial or even to see the evidence against them. He voted to allow Donald Rumsfeld, the architect of the disaster in Iraq, to decide who should be imprisoned and who shouldn't and for how long. And anyone who Donald Rumsfeld fingers never gets a trial.
(continued...)
Thanks to Joe Lieberman, we are now the only nation in the Western world with a government that condones such blatant disregard for international law and human rights. We helped set up this system after the atrocities of the Nazis and now our government is tearing it down. Our government condones this, but the American people don't, the people of Connecticut don't. I don't. I oppose torture. I will never defile America in that way. Information obtained under torture is worthless - people will say anything to get it to stop.
More than that, it exposes both our troops and any Americans who are abroad to serious danger, for if we allow such vile behavior, then how do we stop others from doing the same? If we can snatch anyone off the streets and hold them indefinitely without charges and without a trial, then other nations might decide that they should do the same. Joe Lieberman has voted to put our troops and our citizens at serious, serious risk, and is destroying what makes America great: the rule of law.
We need a government that opposes torture. We need a government that respects the rule of law. We need Senators and Congresspeople who will stand up and pull America back from this abyss that George Bush and Joe Lieberman have made. We need Senators who will stand up and say, "Not in my name!"
In November, stand with me, and help me make America respected and a beacon for hope once again.
