OK, there's been a lot of talks around the blogosphere about what are we gonna do, as well as a bit of hand-wringing. Here's the thing - if we are serious about making some changes in how the democrats work, we
must stand up. I mean, get the message out to your senators in congress - do the job we expect of you, or start looking for a new job.
more on the flip.
There are just too many important issues here. If anyone here thinks Scalito isn't going to jump on Roe vs. Wade like a hobo on a biscuit, and overturn it lickety-split, I don't know what planet you're on.
Aside from Scalito's voiced and written opinions, what we have to take him down for are two (related) issues:
- Truthiness - he's all about the CAP, until it becomes 'inconvenient'
- Integrity - someone who will so blatantly lie to the committee as he has thus far, obviously has no qualms about 'smiling in your face while he stabs you in your back'
Therefore, I sent the following letter to my Senators (in virginia), demanding some action:
Dear Senator XX
I'm writing to you about the senate confirmation hearings regarding Mr. Alito. It has become painfully obvious that Mr. Alito has many ethical flaws, mainly blatantly lying about his involvement with CAP while at Princeton University. While I find the role and purpose of CAP to be deplorable, the fact that Mr. Alito found it convenient to list his involvement with CAP in order to get a job with the Reagan administration during the 1980's, while now he finds it "difficult to recall" what the reason for his joining the group was, nor what exactly it was that he did there, is a blatant lie. Now I can remember events from my childhood reasonably well, and even have no trouble remembering the name of my Drill Sergeant at Ft. Knox (SSG Goodgame) almost 20 years ago.
- It is obvious from the previous positions and writings of Mr. Alito that he has a personal animus towards Roe vs. Wade, and will overturn it at the drop of a hat. Strike one.
- It is also obvious that he believes that the executive branch, particularly the President, has practically unlimited powers, thus making the legislative branch irrelevant - not to mention the Constitution. Strike two.
- He is also a blatant liar and is revealing a lack of character that is in no way deserving a seat on the bench of the highest court in the land. Strike three.
There is an obvious solution to this - he must not be appointed. I, and many others will be watching the actions of our senators very closely. I have repeatedly voted for you over the years, particularly for your positions regarding veterans. However, on this important vote, a failure to stand up and send Mr. Alito home will be remembered come election time.
Sincerely,
I hope all of you here take some kind of action demanding that we stand up to this guy (Alito) and make sure that the senators in our states understand how important this is to us.
Now in my case, Sens. Warner & Allen are probably not the most "democrat-friendly", but they are my senators, and damn well better believe that come next election time, how they voted on Scalito will be remembered.
