The picture of those students silently protesting at Gonzales' speech holding up banners with Ben Franklin's quote, "Those who would sacrifice liberty for security deserve neither", sent a visually powerful message!! And I think they were onto something.

What if all across the country at the same time on the same day there were silent gatherings of peaceful American citizens holding banners with Ben Franklin's quote, "Those who would sacrifice liberty for security deserve neither". One would not have to even be in a group ... just wherever you are at the appointed date and time, unfurl your banner and stand silently.
Washington Journal on C-SPAN today lead off with the NY Times article about the student's silent protest. And the first question of the call-in program was based upon Franklin's quote. What's more important to you liberty or security? I was surprised that the simple quiet act of those brave students captured the attention of the media, albeit the story was on page A18 of The NY Times, but it was a huge picture.
So .... how about it? Lets hold silent countrywide vigils, unfurl our banners, and put Bush on notice that this issue is NOT going away no matter how many times they trot out Gonzales and that NSA general who looks like he was straight out of the movie "Seven Days in May".
