The fillibuster didn't happen. There are limits to what can be accomplished by calling our congresscritters. The outporing of opposition to Alito was heartening, but its going to take more than this to stop this President. And I don't just mean working to get more Dems elected in November. WE need to take it to the streets.
Protests are currently planned for tonight in 64 CITIES!!! Check if there is one in yours. And just because you don't know about it yet doesn't mean one isn't planned in your area.
The group organizing these actions,
World Can't Wait organized high school and college walkouts in several dozen cities on November 2. They have a sense of the urgency of the accelerating drift towards fascism in this country, an understanding of the importance of taking it to the streets, and a demonstarted capacity for organizing imaginative actions with an absolutely clear message: Bush Must Go!
Instead of waiting for elected officials fearful of alienating imaginary swing voters to take the lead, World Can't Wait is dedicated to creating a groundswell of grassroots action demanding that Bush leave office. Whether he is impeached, forced to resign, or captured by an angry mob storming the White House and delivering him to the Hague, Bush has to go and it won't happen until people get into the streets and demand it.
The State of the Union actions are particularly well conceived. Even the best State of the Union speeches are stultifying dull for the vast majority of TV viewers. Local news outlets will feel obligated to run pieces on peoples reactions to the speech and these actions -- timed to give them an opportunity to get the video before the speech -- will undoubtedly recieve a great deal of news coverage. It is imporatant therefore that they be as big as possible. In some places that means a dozen people. In others it might mean thousands. But all of us should do our part to build these demonstrations and get the word out.
See you in the streets tonight!
