I see that the same for-profit energy/investment company that got a Dem group to promote them via e-mail is now advertising on Daily Kos. Am I the only one who is irritated by this 21st Century sale of indulgences? Do the young people shown in their ads really think that this is a socially responsible way to "balance" (their word) the pollution we each heap onto the atmosphere on a daily basis?
I hesitate to provide a link, because it may promote an idea I don't endorse. They have an ad on Kos's front page currently (Jan. '06). Alright, here's a link:
scam.
In a nutshell, this group is trying to get people to calculate the cost of the carbon dioxide their cars generate, and to send an equivalent check to this for-profit energy investment company. The proceeds of the check are vaguely devoted to replacing inefficient production of industrial energy with more efficient methods or technology.
Apparently the company invests in wind power and "industrial efficiency." These are industries that are already eligible for significant "green" power subsidies from the government (although I'm sure King George has reduced funding). So this company is selling itself as a psuedo-social investor, making no secret of the fact that it aims to make a profit (but not revealing anything about the percentage of its proceeds that go to salaries, or the amount applied directly to installing technology to reduce pollution).
I know America's love affair with the automobile makes us ripe for this kind of appeal to our guilty polluting consciences. But why not just send a check to the Sierra Club, or Greenpeace or any other non-profit that promotes responsible treatment of the environment?
Jerome, am I overreacting?
