Having never been to a presidential library, I didn't have any idea what it was going to contain. The galleries were massive including a mock-up of the oval office and the cabinet room. In the largest gallery, there is a timeline of all his years in office including comprehensive video and artifacts on several areas of effort the administration worked on while he was in office.
The interviews with the cabinet members and the public brought back a real feel of that time. I was a young adult then, and totally uninterested in politics. It was with curiosity and some chagrin that I slowly tried to take in the massive amount of information presented. I realized just how little I had paid attention at the time. Other than the triumphant recording of the speech where he announced a balanced budget, a lot of what I saw were things I had never registered when they were happening.
There were many concepts in my mind after I had spent time thinking about what I had seen. The one that has captured my imagination, by far, is the concept of globalization. President Clinton had at the time, and probably still does have, a vision of how the world interconnects that I really appreciate. My focus as a homeschool parent and, indeed, the focus of our present journey is the idea of how my family fits in this world and making my children ready for it in the best way I know how.
What my husband and I have discussed since is how we are going to incorporate the idea of more public service into our family life. I hope President Clinton would be pleased to know that.
